Pastor's Notes

Pastor's Notes

January 17, 2017

This morning I opened my newsfeed to discover the adult child of a friend of mine had died tragically. My friend, a Presbyterian pastor and I had served on a Board together for six years and had exchanged a lot about our families through those plane rides together. His son, a Navy aviation instructor, was an outstanding young man and an accomplished member of the military.

During tragedies such as these, I often grow reflective, searching for deeper meanings that God may be teaching me. I noticed that in the death announcement that Romans 8 was quoted: "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)

Paul's list includes death first. I don't think that is an accident. In fact, I believe Paul knew that death is the usual detractor whereby we ask, "Where is God?" or "Doesn't God care?"

"No, we are MORE than conquerors through Him who loved us!" Paul goes on to say with zero doubt that God is with us! As we carry out our day (and days), let us be reminded that God is with us and for us! And, of course, death does not hold the last word! What a mighty God we serve!
