Pastor's Notes

What has been is what will be ...

March 28, 2017

Charles H. Duell was the Commissioner of US patent office in 1899. Mr. Deull's most famous attributed utterance is that "everything that can be invented has been invented." I ran across this quote last week. It speaks to the human condition. I am challenged by it. Perhaps you will be, too.

The Scripture that comes to mind in light of this notion is found in Ecclesiastes, chapter one:

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, "See, this is new"? It has been already in the ages before us.

When we attempt to find our meaning, our hope from all those things "under the sun", we will find that most issues or problems are quite similar to the issues or problems of the past. When we feel that everything is pretty much routine, we find life can be too predictable and settled. And yet, when we find our meaning and hope from those things "above the sun" (God), we are able to navigate life with much more comfort, energy, and zest.

In what ways do you see God crafting out a new future for you?
